From Screen to Shelf: A Packaging Design Project at SkilzHub Perinthalmanna

A product package has only a few seconds to catch someone’s attention. Its colours, images and text need to work together so that people can recognise the product and understand what it is for.

At SkilzHub Perinthalmanna, a graphic design student explored this idea by creating a packaging design inspired by Surf Excel. The project brought a familiar washing product into the classroom and gave the student an opportunity to turn a digital design into a physical package.

A Washing Product as the Design Idea

For this project, the student chose a washing product and built the packaging around a Surf Excel theme. The design uses a blue colour scheme, water imagery and a washing machine visual to communicate the product’s purpose.

When the student shared her packaging design on Instagram, Surf Excel India commented on her post. It was an encouraging moment for her to see a brand she had chosen for her project notice her work.

The front of the package also includes product information and a handle at the top. Once the design was printed, it was cut and folded into a box. Seeing the finished package gave the student a chance to look at the design beyond a computer screen.

A design that looks good on screen also needs to work when it is printed and assembled. Text should remain readable, images need to fit the available space and the different sides of the package should come together properly.

Thinking Beyond a Flat Design

Packaging gives graphic designers a different kind of space to work with. Unlike a poster or a social media post, a package has several sides, folds and edges. The designer needs to think about how each part will appear when the product is held or placed on a shelf.

In this project, the student worked with a box format and arranged the design across its surfaces. The finished piece shows how a classroom idea can take the shape of an everyday product.

Practical work like this is useful for students learning graphic design. It encourages them to think about where their designs will be used and how people will see them.

Learning Graphic Design Through Practice

Students joining a graphic design course in Perinthalmanna often want to learn more than how to use design software. They also want to understand how to develop an idea and present it in a form that others can see and use.

At SkilzHub Perinthalmanna, projects give students room to practise these skills. Packaging design is one example of how they can explore colour, layout and product presentation while working towards a finished piece.

For anyone interested in a graphic design institute in Perinthalmanna, seeing student work can offer a helpful view of the learning experience. Each project gives students something to reflect on, improve and add to their growing body of work.
